Kenneth Capshaw retired from his lecturer position at the University of Texas at El Paso in May of 2024 where he was the Director of the UTEP Jazz Ensemble 1 and taught brass chamber and brass methods classes. He has been involved in music education for over fifty years in the El Paso area and was a band director in the El Paso ISD for twenty-five years. The concert, jazz, and marching bands at all of his schools were consistent sweepstakes winners. The Coronado High School Band, under his direction, received the Texas Bandmasters Exemplary High School Band award in 2012.
He retired from the El Paso Symphony Orchestra after fifty years of service as Assistant Principal trumpet. He has performed as a guest soloist, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the Southwest for many years, and teaches trumpet master classes and private lessons throughout the state.
He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, The Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Capshaw received the Band World Legion of Honor award in October of 2010, and the Texas Bandmasters Meritorious Achievement Award in July of 2011. He was inducted into the Beta Mu Bandmasters Hall of Fame in July of 2013, and was elected to the American Bandmasters Association in March of 2016. He was selected as The Texas Bandmaster the Year in July of 2018.
